Live Power Community Farm Weekend - 3 Days/2 Nights

This country retreat weekend features a hands-on experience on a biodynamic farm, organic wine tasting and a tour through the 12-acre Solar Living Center. Explore alternative farming methods as we roll up our sleeves and dive into the evolving nature of mindful farming and energy sourcing.

A short ride away from the hubbub of San Francisco lies the bountiful goodness of Live Power Community Farm. Established in 1977, this unique haven employs the “live power” of draft horses instead of machinery utilizing sustainable, renewable energy to cultivate the land.

Skirted by the mountains of Mendocino county, the fertile Round Valley is the home of one of the first Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms in the nation. Stephen and Gloria Decatur, creators of the farm, have been maintaining their commitment to their spiritual, ethical and ecological method of farming and have continued to deliver their produce to various CSA members for the past forty years.

This will be an educational as well as recreative weekend — Stephen and Gloria are thrilled to pass on their knowledge to visitors and will inspire you with the art of creating a relationship with the many different plants and animals that constitute a farm. Through immersion in the activities of the farm you’ll have a practical, productive work experience and will learn various aspects of holistic farming and management practices.

As with all Tortoise-style adventures, community building and teamwork is achieved through group participation of meal preparation. Our meals will be family-style and we’ll be using organic ingredients from the farm when possible. Evening affords us the relaxed atmosphere of the country; campfires, story time, singing or playing music, or a splash in the local creek are all ways to enjoy ourselves and bond until bedtime.

Plan to pitch a tent (tents and sleeping bags can be rented from us) or sleep on the bus in our converted sleeper coach for the two nights we are away.

In addition to our immersion into organic agriculture we will make a stop at Real Goods in Hopland for a tour of their Solar and Renewable energy facility. We’ll also visit Frey Vineyards in Redwood Valley, producer of organic and biodynamic wines, for a tour of their vineyard with time for some wine tasting and a light lunch in their lovely setting.

Join us for an amazing weekend experiencing the joyous integrity of growing, eating and treading lightly on the gift that is our land.
