Ready to Roll!

June through October is our peak travel season, not only because it's the ideal time to visit the national parks in the United States, but also because of the sheer volume of travelers. Some of you travelers are still making plans: figuring out where to go and where to stay. If you're considering a holiday in the U.S.A. this summer, you should look no further than the Green Tortoise!

There's nothing else like Green Tortoise adventure travel -- even a short Yosemite trip on the Green Tortoise is a vacation, and the longer adventures will become lifelong memories. As "Driver Dave" describes below, a Green Tortoise Cross Country U.S.A. adventure is an awesome way to see the very best of the U.S.A. -- our cross-country itineraries are designed to include the best national parks and cities.

Need a safe, affordable, and fun place to stay before or after your Green Tortoise Adventure? Are you planning to visit the cities of Seattle or San Francisco? The Green Tortoise has hostels that enjoy prime locations in the heart of these great cities, close to public transportation and the best attractions. Our rates are the best in town and include loads of free amenities! Our hostel staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to help you make the most of your visit. For more information about our hostels, check out our website:

In addition to the Green Tortoise message boards, there are many great travel forums on the Internet to meet up with other travelers and exchange ideas. Check out the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree for tips and travel advice. And if you're going to stay in a city where the Green Tortoise doesn't have a hostel, check out the Hostel Handbook for online listings, reviews, and other information about the best places for backpackers in the U.S.A.

Best wishes for fun and safe summer travels! Happy trails from the gang at Green Tortoise

Our Far-Flung Staff:
Cross Country U.S.A. with Driver Dave

- Join us on our upcoming Northern Crossing Cross-Country adventure on June 22!

The Great American road trip. Coast to coast. Cross-country. Call it what you will, there's nothing like packing up and traveling across the United States. Green Tortoise Cross Country USA trips are truly unforgettable and something I've experienced over thirty times as a Green Tortoise lead driver. I've seen tons of stunning national parks, discovered interesting small towns, found unique state parks, and explored world-class big cities. Along the way I've had the chance to meet lots of locals, snap incredible photos, directed gourmet cookouts, spotted rare wildlife, and camped out under the stars.

Yep, I'm a Green Tortoise cross country specialist, and I've had the privilege of bringing groups of travelers across the USA since 2000. My single favorite thing about our cross country adventures is the contrast of experiences: our riders find out that the United States has an incredible diversity of landscapes, great cities (big and small), unique regional accents, and of course, lots of only-in-America spots. I am always asked which of the four Cross Country USA trips is my favorite, and I truly have trouble giving an answer because each is special in its own way. Why not hop aboard and find out for yourself?

See you on the bus,
"Driver" Dave

Sammy's Choice: Santa Monica Farmers Market

Check out the Wednesday Farmers Market and other amazing destinations on these two great Green Tortoise adventures:
- California Coastal Crawler
- Western Trail

Spring and summer present an abundance of fresh produce in California! Certifiend Farmers' Markets have showcased the very best selections of fruits and veggies statewide since 1978. Among other great things going on, the city of Santa Monica is known for the market it hosts year round on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Rain or shine, the Santa Monica market sets up at four different locations (locations vary depending on the day) and not only supports local, sustainable agriculture, but also provides regular educational programming including "Lunch with a Chef," and cooking demonstrations. The Main Street Sunday market also features musical performances and a number of activities for kids and families. For more information on the Santa Monica Farmers Market visit their website:

Ready to eat? You can check out the Wednesday Farmers Market if you take our Green Tortoise Western Trail! The Western Trail departs twice per month (June through October) and includes camping at Big Sur, Hearst Castle, Los Angeles, Joshua Tree and Las Vegas. Our California Coastal Crawler is another great way to get to Santa Monica from San Francisco. Located at Arizona Ave and 2nd Street, the market is within walking distance of our Santa Monica drop off.

Not able to join us? Visit your own local market and try your hand at Veggie Stir fry from our very own Green Tortoise Cookbook!

Name the Bus Conest Winner!

Thanks to everyone who suggested a name for our new bus! Your responses were all fantastic.

And the winner is: Halley, contributed by Gen Van Der Togt. Congratulations! We are looking forward to many adventures with our newest addition.

Those of you who have ridden before know that the two things that make our trips so special are our great buses and YOU! Your contributions and cooperation on trips truly make Green Tortoise one of a kind! If you haven't ridden yet, we hope that you will hop on board soon. Whether you've ridden or not, you can still contribute to the wonderful spirit of Green Tortoise by way of this newsletter. In our first issue of the Crawler Chronicle we mentioned wanting to highlight your experiences. So here's the official call for submissions.

Send us a story (350 words maximum) about best (or most unsual or most fun) meal you had on the Green Tortoise. If we select your story we will publish it in our June issue; you'll get 500 frequent crawler points and the chance to share your story with thousands of readers!

Submissions should be received by May 30 to be considered for the next issue, but we'd love to hear your stories whenever you send them, so if you can't make it by then, we will consider your tale for future issues.

Looking forward to hearing from you!
